On Monday night I closed my laptop as usual. When I tried to log on Tuesday morningit wouldn't start. I was able to run a full scan for 4 hours and there were no viruses. I have not added anything but a McAfee Live Safe. How do I defragment and disk clean up?
Support for 8 ended in 2016.
You were supposed to use the free upgrade to 8.1.
You say it wouldn't start.
How did you run a scan for 4 hours if you couldn't log in?

Well, I evidently have been using 8.1 up to Monday.
I have been researching on my antique Acer desktop to look for solutions on You Tube. I waited until I could finally start>run>cmd to get to a scan page.
and did a full scan. Now all my tabs show but they don't complete. It's a HP Pavilion. I've tried to restore, every troubleshooting offered and available t me in the control panel, Windows update, system maintenance.

You can clean up your Hard Drive using these two methods.
"Delete files using Disk Cleanup"
Using the Free CCleaner Program:

Under NO condition use the Registry cleaning Option in CCleaner

And I would check to see if there are corrupted System Files.
Each Method/step below progresses to the next if the first does not fix any corrupted files that are found, etc.

And these eightforums.com Tutorials are very detailed for problems resulting from SFC Scan:
"How to Run "SFC /SCANNOW" Command at Boot or in Windows 8 and 8.1"
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html
Read this Section there in conjunction with the rest of the information they give in above link.
Note
If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the
sfc /scannow command 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.
If not, then run the
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the
sfc /scannow command again.
If still not, then try using OPTION ONE above to run the
sfc /scannow command at boot
