Hi,

Thank you for choosing Windows 8 and for providing us an opportunity to assist you.

From your issue description, I understand that you are unable to shut down, hibernate and sleep the computer.

Before we start troubleshooting on the issue please provide us with the additional information by answering few questions mentioned, this will help us to troubleshoot better.
1. What is the make and model of the computer?
2. What happens when you click on shutdown button?
3. Has the issue immediately started after upgrading to Windows 8?

Now let’s try some steps for resolving this issue like power troubleshooter, change power plan settings and force shutdown.

These steps I have described in the following methods.

I want you to disconnect all non essential devices connected to the computer and check.

Method 1: Run the Power troubleshooter and see if it helps.
a: Press Windows logo + W to open the search box.
b: Type troubleshooting, hit enter.
c: Now click System and Security.
d: Click Power.

Method 2: I want you to follow the steps given below and check.

a.       Press Windows key +X.
b.       Click Power Options.
c.        On the Left side menu select Choose what the power buttons do.
d.       Now go to section which says when I press the power button.
e.        Scroll down and select shutdown.
f.        Select the Save Changes Button.
g.        Repeat the same steps for sleep and hibernate options also.

Method 3: I want you to shut down the computer from command prompt and check.
Follow the steps.
a. Press Windows key + X.
b. Now click command prompt (admin)
c. Now type shutdown -s -t 0 and hit Enter.

You can also try changing the power plan.

Method 4: Change the “Power plans” settings.
A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings (like display, sleep, etc.) that manages how your PC uses power. The power plans you can use depend on the kind of PC you have.

Hi
thanks for your reply.

1. It is Dell Inspiron 15R(5520)
2. When I shutdown the screen light will be turned off. But the power light( which shows whether the system is running or not) will stay. It will not stop till the battery consumed completely( if charger is not there)
3. I think this is not from the date of upgrading. After some period of time this problem came.
