After a fresh install my windows 8 laptop keeps locking up

I was running windows 8 on my samsung QX411 laptop for a while, and I was having some issues.  So I did a fresh install of windows 8 that helped correct some of those issues.  But since day 1 of the new installation my computer now completely locks up at least once a day.

Once it locks up I have to do a hard reset and bring it back up.  I know that this isn't good for the laptop at all.  Also it isn't consistent.  Sometimes it will lock up right after a reboot, sometimes it will lock up after 8 hours of constant usage.  I haven't been able to trigger it on purpose.

I assume it's a bad driver causing the issue since the OS and the Hardware haven't changed at all.

How can I figure out who the culprit is?

Thanks

Are you getting any error message or code when it locks up?

It would be better to post your dump files for analysis.

No, it just locks up.  No messages, no error, it just completely freezes and becomes unresponsive.

Where are the dump files located?

Edit: I just installed "WhoCrashed" and it said that I had no dump files.  So I went into system properties->advanced->startup and recovery and made sure that my system was setup to create memory dumps.  And it is.

I checked the location "%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP" and I don't have a crash dump.

Dump files normally would not be created on a lock up.  When it locks up, to your recollection, does it happen doing one particular task more often than others or is it just erratic.

Verify that your BIOS is version 1.0.0.2

In Device Manager are there any yellow exclamation marks beside any device.

Do you have a 3rd party anti virus program installed.

Run chkdsk for bad sectors.

What were the issues were you having before you refreshed.

Not really, I usually have visual studio open so that could be the culprit.  In the most recent lockup I tried to open Visual Studio right after booting and it locked up while it was in the splash screen.

I'm not sure about the BIOS Version.  It says it's 10HS.  I'll past the system information all the way at the bottom of this message.

No items in Device manager have yellow marks.

No 3rd party antivirus software.

I've run chkdsk a few times with no issues.

I was having an issue with the system running really slowly right after a boot (still happens) and I was having issues seeing external drives (the refresh fixed that).

here is my system info

Thanks for all the help so far.

I suspect that Visual Studio did not install correctly and suggest that you reinstall it.  You may confirm this with your install logs.

Verify that your graphics driver is current.

Also verify that the driver for your USB external device is current.

Run system maintenance, may help boot up times.

a)      Go to Control Panel

b)      In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting.

c)       Click System and Security,

d)       Click System maintenance.

e)      And follow the steps.

When and if it freezes again wait a few minutes before power booting the computer, let me know what you were doing before the Freeze.

Thanks for all the help.  I wanted to follow up and let you know the status.

Unfortunately it wasn't visual studio.  After all was said and done I believe it was some proprietary software called "S Agent" from samsung.

After removing that all is well.

Hi Smeegs!

I would like to ask u an off topic about Bios laptop whether possible.

Are u able with 10HS to run linux live in CD or Usb drive?

Has secure boot blocked that option?

If u made the bios update from 7HS to 10HS has been noticied any different behavior?

Non stop fan (noisy), more temperature...?

I'm not sure to update because there is no info about the "improves".

Thx!
