I cannot access 'http' sites when using my windows 8 laptop.

I can only access secure websites on any browser.  When I attempt to access any http website I get an error message 'cannot display page'.  When I try to update any program I get a timed out or a 'you need to be connected to the internet' message.  I do have an internet connection and running the troubleshooter can not find any problems.  Please help!!

Answer

Hi Eileen,

Let us work together to resolve this issue.

It seems that the security settings on the computer are set to high.

Here’s what you can try:

Method 1: Change the User Account Control settings to default.

Please refer to this link:

What are User Account Control settings?

Method 2: Temporarily disable the anti-virus and Windows Firewall and check if the issue is resolved.

Windows Firewall from start to finish

Turn off Windows Firewall Disclaimer:

1.     You should not turn off Windows Firewall unless you have another firewall enabled. Turning off Windows Firewall might make your computer (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to damage from worms or hackers.

2.     In addition to a firewall, you also need an antivirus and anti-malware program to help protect your computer. Install Microsoft Security Essentials or another antivirus and anti-malware program, and keep it up to date. Many of these programs update automatically.

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Please get back to us with the status of the issue.
