USB 3 card reader does not read CF cards in Windows 8

I have a Sandisk all-in-one USB 3.0 card reader. It worked with Windows 7.

Since I upgraded to Windows 8 Professional it is not possible to read any CF card; with a card in the slot the LED flashes continuously. I have tried more than one card. The SDHC card slot works OK. I haven't tried the other slots. I have tried a different USB port on the PC.

I have upgraded the bios on my Asus M5A99X EVO motherboard and updated the chipset drivers to the latest version.

The device manager shows all four slots under 'disk drives' and 'portable devices'. The File Explorer also shows all four slots.

Any ideas? Please.

Hi Peter Johnson,

I would suggest you to download the installing .net compact framework. The latest versions is 3.5 from the link mentioned below and check how it works.

Hope this helps if any issues please reply

Thanks for replying.

I installed the .net framework, and rebooted my PC, but it still doesn't work. The four slots still show up on the device manager/disk drives and in the file explorer but now only three of them appear in the device manager under portable devices. It makes no difference if a card is inserted or not.

Thanks again.

I'm having the exact same problem. Same card reader, every CF card just sits in there and blinks. Installing .net compact framework did nothing.
SanDisk could not offer any resolution through email, either.
The reader does just fine in any USB 2.0 port.
My motherboard is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe.

Ha! It never occurred to me to try it in a USB 2.0 port but, yes, it does work OK there. Must be something amiss with the Win8 USB 3.0 driver I think.

I fixed it by reinstalling Windows 8... :-/ I first upgraded from Win7 to Win8 and noticed that the card reader wasn't working over USB 3.0. After a few days of weird anomalies I decided to do a fresh Win8 install. When I got my machine running again I noticed that the card reader worked over USB 3.0 again. Go figure. Must be a driver issue on upgrade.

That's unfortunate for me! Mine was a fresh install, not an upgrade.

Mine was an in-place upgrade. I wonder if a system repair would fix it. I'll try it over the weekend.

Scratch that... I just tried it and it's not working again. It works with SD cards, but not with CF cards.

Thanks. The Hoodman is $49.99 in the US, £51.95 here in the UK. I'll try this, http://www.lexar.com/products/lexar-professional-usb-30-dual-slot-reader?category=203, I think. £21.95 on Amazon UK.
