My DVD/CD drive does not work in Windows 8 Professional, and it IS NOT a hardware problem.
My DVD/CD drive does not work in Windows 8 Professional with or without data or audio media in it. However, if I power down the PC with a bootable CD/DVD in it, the PC does recognize the media and boot the DVD/CD when powered on. This confirms that the
DVD/CD drive actually works, but for some stupid reason, Microsoft Windows 8 Professional will not recognize the same DVD/CD drive that it loaded from! Thank you again Microsoft for another crappy product. Now how are you gonna fix that? And just how are we
supposed to launch things like Notepad, or Paint, etc. I predict Windows 8 will make a faster downfall than Windows Me!

This is a real help :
Windows Store - Top Free - Windows 8 Cheat Keys
While on the Start Screen type - Help
Or Win Key + Q = Search Apps - Help
Or Charms Menu - Search - Apps - Help
After any of the above -> On left click -> Help and Support.
Try this - Control Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click the device - Driver's
Tab - click Update Drivers (this will likely do nothing) - then RIGHT CLICK the drive -
UNINSTALL - REBOOT this will refresh the default driver stack
