Error while burning CD-RW disc "unable to format CD-RW"

Original Title: Went from Windows XP to 8. How do I burn a CD-RW?

Recently bought an HP Pavilion with Windows 8 installed. I have had Windows XP for many years, so have had some
difficulty in adapting to 21st Century technology. I have transferred text from a CD-RW, burned with Windows XP,, to
Windows 8, then erased the CD-RW. Now, after editing the text, I am unable to burn it back onto the blank CD-RW.
I get the old "unable to format CD-RW.   What gives?    Scrappy White

Answer

Hi Thomas,

I would like to gather certain information to help you better with burning of CD-RW discs:
1) How are you trying to burn the CD? Are you using any third party software?
2) What is the exact Model of HP Pavilion computer?

It could be an issue related to driver or firmware update for the CD/DVD drive on the computer or could also occur due to issues with the CD-RW disc.

I would suggest you to check if you are able to burn the CD-RW on a different computer. Let’s also check if you are able to burn other CDs on the computer.

To further troubleshoot the issue, I would suggest you to check if updating the driver for the CD/DVD drive and check if it helps.

Follow the methods:

Method 1:
You can follow the steps to update the driver for the drive:
a) Press Windows and X key together and select Device Manager.
b) Locate DVD/CD Rom drives and expand the drive icon.
c) Right Click on the driver icon and select Update driver software.
d) Click on Search automatically for the updated driver software.
e) Check if the driver is getting updated.

You can also refer to the manufacturer website to check for the latest firmware updates for CD/DVD drive.

Method 2:
I would suggest you to burn CD-RW using Windows Media player and check if you get the same issue.

You can refer to the link to burn a data CD:
Burn a CD or DVD in Windows Media Player
Follow the section “Burn a data CD or data DVD

Hope it helps you to resolve the issue.
