DVD player on laptop does not work since installing Windows 8

The DVD player on my laptop will not view movies ever since I installed Windows 8.  Any ideas what app or function has to be addressed to make it work.  I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue (I doubt it, it worked fine before) or some video software issue.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, Windows 8 does not natively support the playback of DVD movies.  You will need to install either Windows Media Center (not player) or a 3rd party application.

I recommend VLC - a free, open-source media player.  It will play DVD files immediately after install.  Extra steps need to be taken if you have a Blu-Ray player on your device.
