Dell Inspiron Duo with Windows 8 OEM 32-Bit (Touch not working)

Hi.

I installed Windows 8 on my Inspiron Duo but now the touch screen is not working. The OS doesn't even recognise the DUO's touch capabilities.

Everything were working fine with the Release Preview.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Harshen

Hi Harshen,

the first thing I would advise to check is to make sure you have the most up to date drivers. Keeping in mind Windows 8 officially released today, I would say visit the Dell Dup support site and download/install the specific Windows 8 drivers for your specific system.

Here is the link to Dell support page, enter in your system's information and download the appropriate drivers:

good luck!

Hello.

I updated all drivers, but still no multi-touch capabilities. Even the Tablet PC Setting is not available anymore. I tried the Windows 7 eGalax Touch driver but didn't work either.

Hi Harshen,

seems to be general problem with 2-points digitizers and FULL (OEM) Version - Upgrade versions seems to have NO Problems on the same computers!

So it can't be a (missing or old) driver problem in general, because why should the Upgrade Win 8 work and the Full Win 8 version not (supposed, that MS used the same drivers in both versions) ?

Harshen did you solve this issue?

According to http://www.soulofageek.com/2012/04/fix-for-accelerometer-issue-on-dell.html#comment-form Eric Logan says with RTM he has no problem.  Is it the same problem?

Evan,

I am having the same problem as Harshen.  I installed a brand new SSD disk on my Inspiron Duo, fresh retail Windows 8 Pro 64 bit and my touchscreen doesn't work.  The link to the site you referenced helped me to get the driver for ST Microelectronics Accelerometer sensor which now fixes the screen rotation (landscape or portrait) but I still cannot use the touchscreen.

If you hear a solution, would you please post it here or a reference link to it?

Thank you,

Sure, will re-post.  Hopefully a solution is found soon.  Win8 without touch screen spoils all the fun and I think that the Dell Inspiron Duo was a laptop for Win8 !

Check, if you have an OEM version (32 or 64 Bit), because (as supposed) the version is "restricted" in a way, compared to Upgrade versions:

(FROM MS Support):

"System builder versions of Windows 8 require Windows 8-certified hardware to enable touch".

That's why its's not working on "OLD" touchscreens...

Gunnar,

I think that is my problem.  I purchased Windows 8 64 bit at COMPUSA / Tiger Direct for $140.  What I got was a white envelope that had just one DVD and a very difficult to read key code on the label / certificate of authenticity.

I am disappointed as I thought I was getting the full retail product.  Is Windows 8 PRO full retail even out yet? I can't find it on microsoftstore.com  or newegg  etc....  I think I read such package will not exist, so how do they expect me to do a fresh install on my PC if they don't sell a full retail package?

I am confused, if Windows 8 requires certified hardware why is even working on upgrade versions for others? (I don't expect an answer, I am just venting)

I was doing a nice upgrade going from HDD to SSD and starting a with a fresh install of Windows 8. Instead I will be forced to go back to my old HDD with Windows 7 32bit and look for a way to upgrade to Windows 8 32bit.   This is a low blow to what was looking as a very exciting week.

Thank you all for your help and reference, seems MS won't let me do it the way I had planned.

Success!

It worked for me.... so that could be the problem Javier/Gunnar.

I got a Win 8 64 bit from MS direct and it worked fine!  During install the Touch Screen worked at once.
