Broadcom Bluetooth drivers

Hi -

I have a Lenovo Z570 laptop which came preloaded with Win7 that I recently upgraded to Win8.  All of a sudden my bluetooth mouse (Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000) has stopped working.

There's an update for the Broadcom Bluetooth 2.1 drivers in Windows update but keeps failing.  I've tried all fixes suggested by online forums to no avail.  Lenovo don't have a Win8 update for this driver and laptop so far and trying to run the Win7 one in compatibility mode doesn't work either.

I've downloaded the drivers from the Broadcom website but that doesn't work, stating that it couldn't start the "Microsoft Bluetooth Stack", however on looking in services.msc it's running fine.

Looking in device manager, there's an unknown device with the yellow excamation mark there, however when I try to update the driver software it eventually fails, stating "access is denied".  Again I've spent hours scouring forums and other places in the internet with nothing working so far.

I've completed all steps in all the threads such as:
  • clean boot
  • manually installing drivers
  • installing from usb
  • creating new user account and installing onto that
  • chkdsk /r (as administrator)
NOTHING is working.

Please can someone help????

Thanks

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community forums where you can find answers to all your Windows related queries.

You have mentioned that the Bluetooth mouse has stopped working suddenly after upgrading to Windows 8. You get a notification saying that driver update is available through Windows update, but it keeps failing. We’ll help you with this issue.

The Bluetooth mouse might have stopped working due to an outdated or corrupted driver file. I would suggest you to try these steps and check.

Method 1: Hardware and devices troubleshooter

The hardware and devices troubleshooter can detect and fix errors and incorrect settings in devices. You can refer these steps to run this troubleshooter:

a)      Press Windows key +X, select Control panel

b)      Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons

c)       Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel

d)      Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

Method 2: Disable security software and check

Sometimes, security software like Antivirus and firewall can block certain services. If you have installed any third party security software, I would suggest you to disable them and check.

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3: Update driver

You have mentioned that you are unable to install the latest Windows 8 driver through Windows update. In this case, I would suggest you to download and install from the manufacturer’s website. You can find the driver here:

http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php

You can also try the steps mentioned in this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/support/troubleshooting

Hope this helps. If the issue remains unresolved, please get back to us and we’d be happy to help.

Hi there and thanks for getting back to me:
Method 1
Fails states:
- Unknown device doesn't have a driver | not fixed
- Unknown device doesn't have a driver | not fixed
- Hardware changes may not have been detected | detected

Method 2
Fails - doesn't install, troubleshooter doesn't work and the update via windows update fails too.

Method 3
Downloaded and fails.  States "Could not start Microsoft Bluetooth Stack.  Reboot your computer and try again"

Have rebooted and normal mode, clean boot and safe mode to no avail.  Windows+R>services.msc shows all bluetooth services up and running.

I have tried all steps in all links through Microsoft, Lenovo Community forum and other forums to try and establish the error to fix this problem but with no help.  Really disappointed with my Windows8 experience.  I genuinely regret purchasing it because it feels like it's ruined my laptop which used to run wonderfully.  Very unhappy

Hi Andy,

You have mentioned that the hardware and devices troubleshooter results showed as “Unknown device doesn't have a driver”. So this could be a driver issue. Since you are unable to install the updates directly, I would suggest you to try updating the driver through device manager. Refer these steps:

a)      Press Windows key +X, select device manager

b)      Locate the Bluetooth device (sometimes it may be listed as unknown device if the right driver is not installed)

c)       Right click and select properties, under general tab, check the device status

d)      Click on the driver tab and click update driver and choose “browse my computer for driver software”

e)      Locate the path where you have saved the driver file and update.

If the above step didn’t help, then I would suggest you to uninstall any Bluetooth driver through device manager and then restart the computer for Windows to detect the device and load the native Windows drivers. To uninstall the driver, follow the same steps as mentioned above and click “uninstall” in the driver tab.

Hope this helps. Please get back to us with the status of the issue so that we can help you accordingly.

Hi Bennett -

Uninstalling the relevant drivers and manually installing them was the first thing I tried before resorting to searching the internet.  I'm pretty good with computers generally.

Thanks

Can this link help you with deciphering the "Unknown Devices"?

In Search Of 'Mystery' Devices

If you search the Manufacture's web site for drivers, can you find and use Windows 8 or Windows 7 drivers for the Chipset?

Getting the update from Broadcom doesnt work either. "Failed to update bluetooth software". Stalls while attempting to Validate Bluetooth Device. It looks to me like Insignia and Broadcom don't put the device drivers on their downloads page. Windows doesn't have a driver.

Try right-clicking on the actual Driver Setup.exe and selecting the "Run As Administrator" option?  Do so even if your user is an Admin.
