How to clear out the Windows.edb file in Windows 8

***POSTING ON BEHALF OF CUSTOMER***

The customer has a Windows 8 PC, and he is wondering how to remove the Windows.edb file. It has stored 60GB of information. Is there any way to have the Windows search option on and have this file shrunk down in size? Is there any way to clear out this folder? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this issue?

Please respond with more information.

Thank you for the help!

Answer
Answer
I just had that issue myself, with a an index consuming 107/278 GiB!

Here's the trick:

1) Search for "Indexing Options" (under "Settings"). Open it.
2) Search "services" (or run "services.msc") and find "Windows Search". Stop the service.
3) Delete the Windows.edb file
4) Click "Modify" in the already-open "Indexing Options" panel, then click "Delete and Rebuild" for the index. You can also specify a different drive to store the index on.

Hope that helps.
