Folder icons become black squares or boxes in windows explorer

when i try to use 'save as' option, in the new explorer window all the folder icons appear as black squares, whereas the other icons like mp3 files appear fine. I'm using windows 8.

The only way to fix it is system restore, but the folder icons will only display correctly for the day. The problem will come back the next day (ie. hibernating and the next morning the problem comes back when I switch on the computer). I tried all ways, deleting the iconcache.db, and even taking ownership of the shell32.dll file and replacing it with the 'normal' copy when the computer displays the icon properly. Nothing works except system restore.

I don't know what is causing the problem, i haven't installed or uninstalled any program, don't know why this is happening.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to help you!!

As I understand, when you try to ‘save’, in the save as window, folder icons turn black.

Thanks for your feedback.

1. Do you have any anti- virus software installed in the system? - No other anti-virus, except window's 8 inbuilt security software
2. Are the blackened icons functional? - yes, they are functional
3. Have you installed any new theme? - no new themes

Surprisingly the problem didn't come back today, hoping it will stay ok.

But if the problem resurfaces I will create a new account and see how it goes.

Hi Sirahatti,

the problem is back, and as suggested I created a new account. Surprisingly all the icons work perfectly in the new account.

When i switch back to my old account the problem remains

Ok, I think I managed to reproduce the problem.

The problem comes everytime I uninstall and install a program. So far I tried uninstalling openoffice, msn messenger and cc cleaner.

The problem will occur once these programs are uninstalled or installed. I'm guessing the installation / uninstallation process messed up the icons? And the only solution is to do a system restore, which is very tedious

I have the same problem. It seems like my problem started when I was using the OpenOffice Calc program. Something got wonky in the way it was rendering the spreadsheet, then all my icons in the SaveAs dialogue turned black. Now they're black in the SaveAs window for all my programs.

I have the same problem here with Win8. I am also have used OpenOffice Calc. So that might be the right direction. But where can I set the standard folder Icon (for all folders at once) ? As I have nothing customized this should work for me.

I just did some tests.
Windows Explorer shows all icon correctly.
Folder or filebrower windows show black icons for folders.
Setting the icon for a special folder creates in that folder a desktop.ini file where the icon path is stored. Now in the folder or filebrowser the choosen icon is displayed.
Additionally I could not find any change in the registry while I changed the icon.

In my opinion there needs to be a registry entry that tells windows which icon to show if there is no desktop.ini file! And that entry is changed by something!

Some more testing:
If I create a new useraccount then the new useraccount has all icons correct!
So it needs to be a user specific issue and therefore it needs to be a value in the registry I suppose.

Hi.

After following few of the suggestion given in previous posts like refreshing or restoring the windows 8 would solve the problem, I tried and it "DID" solve the problem actually but after few days again I'm seeing same black square boxes instead of standard folder Icon.

Along with the folder icon on my drive, I have observed that where ever other places we see standard folder icons (like in favorites in IE) are also turned to black box.

Is anyone aware if Microsoft have released any patch fix to this as I browsed all over web but till none worked.

As far as I understand from your post _all_ folder icons are turned into black squares. That is much different than the problem I had.

For me _only_ the folder in the _filedialogbox_ and _folderdialogbox_ has had black boxes instead the correct folder icon.
Suprisingly it _never_ occured again after I shut down (not sleep modus) the computer and then restarted.

I also have this problem in Win8.

All my folder icons in Windows Explorer are black squares. Very annoying. I also have OpenOffice installed - not sure if that's got anything to do with it...

Also, not sure if this is part of the same issue or not - I run SolidWorks, and the separate filetype icons I had in Win7 for parts, assemblies and drawings have been replaced by a single 'SldWorks Application' icon, making it difficult to know which file is which in the File-Open menu.
