windows 8 mail app will not open (URL) links in metro ie10

Greetings:

I have had this same on going problems with every version of Windows 8 I have installed in the last year.

Clicking a URL in any Mail.app email will not open the link in Metro IE10. Nothing happens. If I go to the start page and manually open IE10, the link clicked in mail.app will be there. The issue is that IE10 didn't start by itself nor did the focus shift to IE10.

If I change the "opening Internet Explorer" in the Internet Properties => Programs tab to "Always Open Internet Explorer on the Desktop" --- then a mail.app URL will open in the Desktop IE10.

I have asked this question before and to date have not seen or heard of a fix. I have read of other users experiencing the same problem.

I have another laptop with Win8 installed that works as intended. The only difference between the two machines is one that still functions has the 32bit version of Win8Pro and does NOT have a 3rd party browser installed (Chrome or Firefox). My 64Bit version is causing me the issue. I believe the installing the another Browser somehow confuses or corrupts the registry.

Simply put. I want my cake. I want both IE's and Chrome on my machine to work together -- if indeed it's Chrome that has messed things up.

Alex,

Yes, I've tried that. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the mail.app suite, as well as Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

I would bet that its a registry setting somewhere, I just haven't found it yet.

Hi Mark,

Sorry for the delayed response. Have you been able to fix the issue?

If not, let us see if the following helps.

Please run the App troubleshooter. This should diagnose and try to repair if there is something wrong with the app. Here`s the link to access it.

Do let us know the results.

Is IE still your default browser or not?  I think it has to be in order to use Modern UI Fullscreen IE.  So does that work?   If not you should make sure that IE is registered as your default browser (e.g. using Default Programs, as the administrator).  You do not have to uninstall the other browser(s) to make IE your default browser.  I wouldn't be surprised though, if installing other browsers would change this, e.g. perhaps they have an option which you should uncheck before allowing the install?

If IE is not your default browser I don't think you should expect IE to open links from anywhere unless you did something to cause that to happen explicitly, such as dragging a link to a Desktop IE or copying a link to ClipBoard and then doing a right-click  Go...   Or perhaps your mail app could provide a right-click or Shift-right-click options list which would let you direct the link away from a default?   Etc.

I just had this problem. I had disable the windows firewall service because I use a 3rd party firewall. You might what to check if Windows firewall service is running. Press Win+X select computer management ---> services. Windows firewall service is require for installing some windows store apps. Apparently it's also needed for win8 apps to update.

I had this problem for several days and tried all the suggestions in all the forums I could find and none of them worked. The only thing that did work, after I reformatted my drive and reinstalled windows 8, I started the mail app and it was working. So I started reinstalling all my software and then it stopped working again. I did a system restore and it was working again. So I started to install one thing check the mail app...still working...tried another...still good. It was then when I installed object dock and tried the mail app that it stopped working again.. Needless to say I uninstalled Object Dock and the mail app started working again. So If you have this problem then uninstall object dock and download rocketdock instead. Object Dock was the problem the whole damn time...days and days of research and having to reinstall the OS and all that damn software and 25 large games. BASTARDS!!! I want my time back dammit.
