Mail App will not sync with Gmail account

Yesterday setup my Windows 8 upgrade on my HP laptop that was running Windows 7. Initially it worked well.

This morning I tried to send an email that had 3 pictures attached. Since that point, I cannot get the mail app to send any messages and it will not sync with Gmail. Sent items just pile up in the outbox. I've tried adjusting the account settings to update every 15 minutes and even manually. But when I try to sync, it just says "syncing" in the upper right and never completes.

Hello Jamie,

 

Were you previously able to send emails using this account?

 

You may have messages in your Outbox preventing you from syncing.

 

Items may be removed from the Outbox by closing the Mail app, disconnecting from the laptop from network/internet and then opening mail again to remove any items in the outbox. Once the items have been removed, close Mail and reconnect your computer to the network/internet and re-open the mail app.
