PNG thumbnails or app icons not displaying

I installed windows 8 over windows 7. I have two issue which I believe are related.  I have no icon in my app tiles, they are blank blocks, and I cannot see any PNG thumbnails although .jpg and .nef thumbnails are fine. I have checked all the folder options. I have a Dell Studio 1558.

Hi KerryTurner,

Thank you for giving us an opportunity to help you with the issue on your Windows 8 PC!!!

From the issue description, I understand that after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, the thumbnails for the PNG image files and the app tiles on the Start screen does not appear in the computer and you are just able to see a blank block instead. Please reply if I got the issue incorrectly.

I can try my best in helping you to fix this issue. Please help me in understanding the issue in detail, so that we will be able to figure out the exact root cause of the issue. We will have to check if both these issues are connected or not.  Reply to the questions given below:

1)       Are all the App tiles on your Start screen showing as blank blocks?

2)       Are you able to open the Apps from the Start screen?

3)       What exactly happens when you click on the App tiles?

Let’s try out some basic trouble shooting steps and check the status of the issue.

Method 1: For the issues with the Apps on the Start screen, let’s run the Apps troubleshooter and check if that works. Click on the link below to run the troubleshooter:

Method 2: For the issue with the PNG file thumbnail, let’s try the steps given below:

a)       Please open the folder where you have saved the PNG files.

b)       Expand the ribbon and click on the ‘View’ tab.

c)       Check if you have selected the ‘Large Icons’ option, if not select the ‘Large Icons’ option in it.

d)       If the issue persists, then please click on the ‘Options’ on the right end of the ribbon.

e)       On the ‘Folder Options’ window, click on the ‘View’ tab.

f)        Please make sure that the option “Display file icons on thumbnails” is checked.

g)       Check the first option which says ‘Always show icons, never thumbnails’

h)       Apply the changes and then uncheck the same option again.

i)         Apply the changes and click on Ok.

j)         Restart the computer and check the issue again.

Hope this resolves the issue. If you are still having the same issue, please feel free to reply and we will be happy to help you with this further.

Hi Rajesh,

You are correct in your understanding.  In response to your questions:

1. All are blank except the ones that get live feeds eg. BING and Photos but SkyDrive, mail etc are blank. Icon from my windows apps like Photoshop etc are ok.

2. I can open all the apps and they function as expected.

3. Operate as expected.

Method 1.

I ran the trouble shooter application. It said

'Display adapter drivers might be out-of-date

There might be a problem with a device or you might need to update your display adapter drivers. The Device Troubleshooter will help identify any known issues.

The troubleshooter made some changes to your system. Try attempting the task you were trying to do before
