How Can I Get Rid Of The Windows 8 "Desktop"?

How can I get rid of the Windows 8 Desktop completely so that everything opens, runs, and closes directly from, in, and back to the Start page/Metro interface?  The Windows 8 Start page is really no different than a Windows 7 desktop crowded with icons for apps and files -- but much more sleek and attractive.  Why is this other Desktop in Windows 8 necessary at all?  This reversion to an older environment when you open certain apps, and then having to flip back and forth between the Desktop and the Start page environments is a needless and clunky compromise.
