Whether you KNOW you have done any of this or not - this is a procedure.  Follow through from beginning.  You can stop if your problem is solved at any point where it asks you to test.  Otherwise, continue until the end.

Check your date, time and timezone.

Check for malware:

Download, install, run, update and perform full system scans with the following two applications:

Removing everything they find. Rebooting when needed. (You can uninstall one or both when done.)

Then perform an online scan with the eSet Online Scanner. Remove whatever is found.

Reboot.

Get the System Update Readiness Tool (save it) and right-click on it and "Run as Administrator". Choose the right one for you:

Let it run/fix things.

Reboot.

Try updating.

If it is still failing, attempt this next:

Reset your Windows Update Components with this FixIt:
How do I reset Windows Update components?

Reboot.

Try updating.

If it still fails, try this...

  1. Start an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:

    net stop wuauserv

    cd %systemroot%

    ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    net start wuauserv

  3. Reboot
  4. Try updating.

**Important** The following issues occur when you do this:

  • Updates that are currently downloaded but that have not yet been installed have to be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
  • When you delete the Software Distribution folder, your download history is removed.
  • If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and from Windows Update, you will have to re-select this option from the Windows Update Web site.

**Note**
If the issue is resolved and you can successfully download and install updates, you can safely delete the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.

STILL failing? We have something else to try...

Use this FixIt:
How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent

Reboot.

Register the WU components:

  1. Start an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:

    regsvr32 Jscript.dll
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Reboot.

Try updating.

If it still fails after that - repeat this part ONCE more...

Reset your Windows Update Components with this FixIt:
How do I reset Windows Update components?

Reboot.

Try updating.

Come back and let everyone know how you faired.

If you got it downloaded and ran it - really you are done.  Move on to the next step.

Followed the entire sequence. Rebooting each time. Still no updates installing. Same error message. This is quite frustrating. Any other help ideas?

Select Start, right click on Computer and select Properties. It will say Service Pack 1 there if it is installed.

I would suggest you run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool and copy and paste the results in a reply for further analysis:

Thanks for your feedback.

Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

1b. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, did you do a clean install of Win7, or did you upgrade from Vista to Win7?

2. When (approx. date) did you first install Avast Free?

3. What anti-virus application was installed before you installed Avast, was your subscription still current and did you uninstall it before you installed Avast?

4a. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

4b. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

5. Are ALL of the following other updates listed in View installed updates (not Update History)? [1]

    (a) KB2761465, KB2797052, KB2789645, KB2778344, KB2799494, KB2790655 & KB2790113;
    (b) KB2769369, KB2742599, KB2756921, KB2736422 & KB2757638 or possibly KB2758694.
    (c) KB2753842, KB2758857 & KB2727528;
    (d) KB2705219 & KB2712808;
    (e) KB2676562 & KB2644615.

6. Is Java Version 7 Update 15 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

7. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.6.602.168 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

8. Is Firefox or any other alternate browser installed other than Chrome?

9. Has IE9 ever been offered to the computer via Windows Update?

10. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)?
