Unable to update, Windows 7 Pro, error 80071A90

I am unable to update Windows 7 for x64-based systems.  Started a few days ago, 4 updates keep failing.  I have tried a safe mode restart, does not work, not able to launch Windows Update itself after safe restart  Have run windows trouble shooter, keeps saying changes were made, but the updates still fail.

The message during update after the computer reboots itself is it gets to about 35% and says "Failure Configuring Windows Update, Reverting..."

This is absurd!

By the way if someone knows how to paste a screen shot here, will be happy to paste the screen shot of the failed updates.

Answer

Assuming the updates-in-question include KB2515325KB2492386, KB2506928, KB2512715 and/or KB982018 & all is well with your computer otherwise:

1. Run a manual check for updates per http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/How-can-I-tell-if-my-computer-is-up-to-date

2. Select (check) only KB2515325KB2492386, KB2506928 and/or KB2512715 & install them; follow all prompts.

3. Now run another manual check for updates, if necessary, and install KB982018 by itself; again, follow all prompts.

Note: All of the updates are Optional, non-security updates so there's no need to panic. In fact, you could probably hide every one of them without having any negative effects on your computer whatsoever.
