Not able to update Windows 7 get the error 80070424

Original title: Windows Phone 7 Update Failed Error Code: 80070424

I have been trying to update the OS on my Windows Phone 7 for several months with no success. Every time I launch Zune and run the update process, I get an error message, quoting code 80070424. I am using Windows 7 on my PC.

Importantly, I have realised that I can't update Windows 7 via the update tool either. It would appear that these things are linked.

I have tried many, many solutions listed on the forums and support areas and it suggests that the issue might rest in the BITS service. I have checked in the Service area and BITS isn't in there. I have tried restarting using the repair tool and that hasn't been successful either.

Forums are suggesting that the only solution to this is a system roll-back. That sounds like total overkill to me, there has to be a simpler solution. What would be even better is if the problem is exclusive and that I can fix my phone update and my computer update with separate fixes.

Please help!

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.
