KB2837618 causes Outlook 2013 to hang

My Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 computer is set for auto updates. On the 13th it installed a lot of Office 2013 updates, including KB2837618. After those updates Outlook 2013 will hang apparently when attempting to sync with IMAP accounts, whether in safe mode or not. So I uninstalled this update and Outlook was working. I see this morning that another round of Office updates were applied, including KB2837618 again. Outlook 2013 behaved the same today so I once again removed the update and this time marked it a hidden. Are you aware of this issue and is there a fix?

Thank you.

Failed update wasn't the issue,it's the ones that succeeded!

This is the major second screw up in the past 3 months .

Sept patches broke the folder views in Ol2K13.

I have reached a point where I can no longer trust M$ to do the right thing.

Known issues with this security update

After this update is applied, you may experience issues with S/MIME certificate verification in Microsoft Outlook. This issue is caused because the update disables remote intermediate certificate fetching in Outlook. (see the full KB Article):

It seems to get worse; not only do these updates (2837618 and 2837643) cause Outlook to hang, it's looking likely they can stop access to Out-Of-Office. I couldn't be absolutely sure, but I have a W7 VM with Office but neither of these updates, and OOO works. I have a W8 VM with Office and both updates, and OOO doesn't work.

I'm just going to test installing these updates on the W7 machine to see if that then breaks OOO access.

Hi pgm554,

Not good- especially as they went through the same thing in September!

Just testing it out on that W7 box now to be sure it is those updates that cause all these problems...

I suspect they may fix the most serious problems arising from these recent updates but it remains to be seen if all will be fixed. They can fix problems months later when you least expect it.

I just found out about the Free/Busy being broken due to the update. Can you give anymore details as to how it is supposed to be fixed. Is there any workaround right now.

Thanks for your feedback.

Try this:
  1. Control Panel -> Program and Features
  2. Select View Installed Updates (upper left had side)
  3. Search for KB2837643 and uninstall (you should find 2. remove both)
  4. Search for KB2837618 and uninstall (you should find 2. remove both)

Note: it will ask you to reboot. you do not need to do so right away

  1. Control Panel -> Mail
  2. Create a new profile and move any pst, nk2 files, etc over to the new profile

Perform a Windows Update check and select Hide Updates when the 2 that you just removed reappears to prevent it from re-installing later.
