How do I reset Windows Update components? I have received error 80073712 each time I tried.

Going to RUN/CMD/net stop bits, I get a System error 5 and an Access is denied notice! This last, was to action the log obtained through CMD entering cat /dev/null>%windir%|WindowsUpdate.log

Using W.7 + SP1.
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (build 7601)

2.60 gigahertz Intel Pentium Dual-Core
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (2 total)
Not hyper-threaded

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the Windows Update programme running?
I have been away and it is 9 months out of date!

Thanks for any input!
