error code 8007010b with windows 7 64bit SP1 update attempt

I'm unable to apply SP1 to windows 7 64 bit - receive error: the directory name is invalid   ERROR_DIRECTORY(0x8007010b).
I ran the system update readiness tool for windows 7.
I turned off MSE antivirus (the only AV installed)
I downloaded and installed the windows update agent from the windows site.
I tried installing SP1 in safe mode.
I ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow
Still same error code and failure to install SP1.

Thanks for any pointers, I'm stuck. I don't want to reinstall...
