I tried to run the troubleshooter with admin rights but that failed to start error code 0x8e5e0247.

I did download a tool from Microsoft “WindowsUpdateDiagnostic” which ran but it failed to fix the problem.

Hi ,

There are three services that are important for checking, downloading and installing the updates. These services are Background Intelligent service, Cryptographic service and the Windows update Service. These should be in started state and running on the computer so that the computer connects to the Windows update server, checks for the update that suits the computer and then download them accordingly.

Follow the steps from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2730071 and make sure these services are started on the computer. If they are, then please stop them and then restart the services. Restart the computer once making changes in the services.

Hope it helps.

Hi,

Please temporarily disable the third party security programs to test this issue. You may boot in Clean Boot to check if it is able to perform Windows Update properly.

Refer:

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" under more information to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Thanks.

Just noticed this error in the application log

Followed the link

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13827.windows-server-2008-event-id-257-system-catalog-database-integrity.aspx

according to the write-up I should have files under the following directory but I do not

%systemroot%\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb

I ran the following
C:\Windows\System32\catroot2>esentutl /p %systemroot%\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb

Operation terminated with error -1811 (JET_errFileNotFound, File not found) after 0.0 seconds.

At this point I am not sure if this problem is related to my original problem or the best method to fix this problem.

Hi,

As you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, it seems that the Operating System files are corrupted. I would ask you to perform an In-place upgrade.

Refer:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099/en-us

Note: Performing a repair installation will not damage files and applications that are currently installed on your computer.

Thanks.

Thank you, for your support. While an in-place upgrade may be the quickest solution it may not be the best for me. Frankly, I would rather take the time to fix the problem. A check of the file system with the System File Checker running this command “sfc /SCANNOW “did detect corrupt files that could not be fixed and it wrote a log. Some of the files are associated with Windows Update the only Windows program not working correctly on this machine. If windows update is the only Microsoft program working why do an in-place upgrade?

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /SCANNOW

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
