Q: Can't install .net framework 3.5 This thread is locked from future replies

I have had to rebuild my PC running XP SP3. I ran Windows update as a matter of course and everything updted except for net Framework 3.5 upgrade which keeps on failing with a 0x643 error. I have gone through the stages of AArons blog posts to try and cure this. But to no avail. It still keeps on failing. I have even downloaded the whole update but that fails as well. With the instll log giving:

Hi Phil998,

Please follow the steps mentioned in the article below to enable Microsoft Installer logging and Windows Update verbose logging and the steps thereafter.

You receive error code 0x80070643 or error code 0x643 when you use the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958052

If this doesn’t help, then try running patch registration cleanup tool from,

Description of the Patch Registration Cleanup Tool

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976220/

Please reset Windows Update components after running cleanup tool from the link below or Run the Fix it to automatically scan and fix the issue.

How do I reset Windows Update components?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Once the Windows Update components are reset, try installing the updates again by choosing two updates at a time as some updates need system restart for the changes to take effect. To do so,

1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.

2. Click on the Change settings option in the navigation bar on the left. You will now be at a screen where you will be able to set up how Windows Vista will download and install updates on your computer.

3. Select the option Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them. When you are done configuring the options as you wish, press the OK button to save these settings. You will now be back at the main Windows Update screen.

4. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

5. You may then download the updates one or two at a time.

6. Click on install updates to install the currently selected updates.

7. Repeat the steps 5 and 6 till you get all the updates you want on your PC.

Hope this information helps you.
