Microsoft Works 9 Security Update?

I have been trying for the past 3 days now to install the Microsoft Works 9 Security Update onto my computer. I have tried through Windows Update and I have tried manually on the website (even where it lists that the new update is not recognizing Office 2007 on computers)......still nothing! I NEED to update my computer fully! What do I do since it's not recognizing the folder on my computer for being installed already and not updating it? It tells me that once the folder is not recognized I have to cancel the installation and I need to be the administrator to give permission (which I am already). Help?

Answer

In no particular order:

Tip: Insert your MS Works CD into the appropriate drive bay before the next installation attempt.

Tip: Access either of the following KB articles via IE (32-bit) only, run the Fix It & reboot before the next installation attempt:

    • http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2258121 [Fix It added on 02 July 2010]

    • http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549 [ignore the title, error number, etc.]

Tip: If no joy, see if you can download the "fullfile" version of the update(s) via http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ or http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/ and then install it/them manually.

Tip: If still no joy & you're running Win7 or Vista, temporarily disable (turn off) User Account Control (UAC) before the next installation attempt.

   • Guided Help: Adjust User Account Control settings in Windows 7:
      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975787

   • Turn User Account Control on or off (Vista)
      http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-User-Account-Control-on-or-off

NB: Remember to turn UAC back on afterwards!
