You may be able to get free Microsoft Support on Security Updates athttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/contact-support.  Give them a try.

Try downloading and installing it manually by downloading it to your desktop and installing it. Insert the KB number to get the right updates and choose the one appropriate for your version of Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.

If that doesn't work, try a clean boot  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135.  If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem.   Follow the procedures in the article.  Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it.  Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

Also read and perform the steps inhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058.

If that doesn't help, please repost your question in the Windows Update Forum at:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads where experts in updates will be happy to assist you.  Please post with the info requested here:What to post in the Windows Update forum

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
