Unable to uninstall Acrobat Reader 5 from Windows 7 64-bit

Every time I try to access a PDF file via IE8 I get a message telling me that I can't view the file with Acrobat Reader 5 and that I must install Acrobat 8 or 9.

I never knowingly installed Acrobat Reader 5 on my pc (though I did install 9.3). When I go to Control Panel I find I'm unable to uninstall it Acrobat Reader 5: when I try to do so, I get a message asking me to wait.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Many thanks.

Sarah
