The windows 7 product code number is worn off. How can I get it?

I support a number of tablets. We were required to downgrade them to Windows XP. Now, I've been given permission to upgrade them to Windows 7. Some of the Windows 7 stickers, on the bottom of the computer, are worn and unreadable. How can I get the product code number? There's nothing funny here; we purchased the product.

Does the manufacturer have a record of the Product Key, if they were released pre-installed with Windows 7?

Anything that can read any damaged labels via improved magnification might be worth a try too.

Ultimately you might have to go cap in hand to Microsoft or the OEM.

Was the XP downgrade a clean install after formatting, and thereby destroying everything to do with Windows 7?

If you have the origonal recovery disks, or the tablets contain the origonal recovery drive, then usually the win key is not required whan using that recovery media

They're unique product keys, not an OEM or generic product key. I don't think they recorded the numbers.

I know about the sticker on the box, but these were not delivered with the boxes. I don't have the original Windows 7 disc's either.

Most of the stickers are OK, but some a re unreadable. I have three machines that are beyond repair; all three have good stickers. I tried to use one of those codes and did not work- the on-line validation failed. I think the product code is linked to the mac address, such that once a code is registered it can only be used with that mac address.

the first time you use the COA key telephone activation is frequently required.

How to activate Windows 7 manually (activate by phone)

1) Click Start, and in the Search box type:   slui.exe  4

2) Next press the 'ENTER' key

3) Select your 'Country' from the list.

4) Choose the 'Phone Activation' option.

5) Stay on the phone (do not respond to any of the automated prompts) and wait for a person to help you with activation.

6) Explain your issue clearly to the support person.

as noted above if you use OEM recovery media (recovery partition or OEM recovery disks) no key is necessary as the OEM SLP key is embedded. you can order recovery disks from your manufacturer.

additional info:

Computers, which are built by large manufactures that come with Windows Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:

A)   OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Windows 7 looks at the motherboard and sees the special instructions and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

B)    COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom,[ or inside the battery compartment]) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations (such as if the OEM SLP key stops self-activating for whatever reason). The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)
