McAfee not connecting to internet.

I am using McAfee Home And Internet Security. A month or two before, I downloaded a program whose name I don't remember. With it came a registry file named Connection Settings. i clicked on it and it made changes to my computer. From that day onward, my McAfee stopped working.
I checked for a solution on internet at McAfee website. They said either to use McAfee Virtual Technician or to re-install it. Then, I called Dell Support Center to reinstall it. After reinstalling,, for at least one hour it showed that 'Connecting to McAfee.com' for activation. i tried again and again but there came a message there is a problem in your server. i again called Dell Support Center and told my problem. They said me to wait for 24-48 hours so that the server get refreshed and after that it  will connect to internet and your product will be activated. It was a week ago and now also its not connecting to internet. Can you please tell me how can I correct this by either editing registry or by any other means. One more thing, I do not have a restore point to undo it dated when it did changes to my computer. I did not find any solution anywhere that is why I have come here.

Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jatin,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community forum.

From the problem description, I see that you have an issue with activating McAfee.

Provide us few more information to understand the issue better.
1. Do you face any issue while browsing Internet?
2. Is the issue specific to McAfee?
3. Do you have any other antivirus software installed on the computer?

If the issue is specific to McAfee I would suggest you to contact McAfee support. We are redirecting since the issues seems to be only with the McAfee program which is not Microsoft Product. So to get better assistance on this issue you may contact McAfee Support.

Hi,

Thank you for the response.

-Are you using wired/wireless internet connection?

It is not a registry issue. This issue may be caused due to some changes in McAfee application or interruption of some third party program. I would suggest you to login to safe mode with networking and try to update MacAfee.

Method 1

Step 1

Start your computer in safe mode with networking

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Note: When at the advanced boot options select Safe mode with networking.

If you are able to update McAfee in safe mode with networking then perform clean boot and check.

Step 2

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

How to troubleshoot problem by performing clean boot in Windows 7:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in Step 7: to reset computer as usual.

Method 2

Run Microsoft Online Scanner.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Important: While performing scanning on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when scanning tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to contact MacAfee Support Forums for better assistance.

Hope it helps.

Keep us posted if you face any issues on windows in future. We will be glad to help you.

Regards,
Anil

Hello Jatin Bumbra,

I suggest you uninstall your software that made registry changes to your system for Connection Settings.
Without knowing the software name, we have no idea what has changed or is being blocked.

Do you see any new programs that show up when you go to All Programs?

You might be able to go into the event viewer and see when you installed the program in the application or system event logs.
You can find and launch Event Viewer by opening the Control Panel, accessing the System and Security category, selecting the Administrative Tools item, and double-clicking the Event Viewer icon. However, you can also simply click the Start button, type Event in the Start Search box, and press Enter once Event Viewer appears and the top of the results display.

Once you have identified the software that was loaded, then you can uninstall it. If you have problems uninstalling it, use the Automatic Fixit for Uninstall programs. Click here for the link to download.

If you continue to have problems with McAfee, you can uninstall it using the McAfee removal tool otherwise, it will leave strings in the registry.

You can download any antivirus you like to be protected. If you want to use Microsoft Security Essentials, you can download it from here. It is a free real-time antivirus.

Let us know if this helps.
