AOL Desktop 9.6 does not work after Windows 7 updates

I installed AOL Desktop 9.6 as a transfer from my old computer with Windows XP to my new computer with Windows 7.  It worked perfectly for awhile, then did not open from the icon, or from the file.  I did a system restore, and again it worked until Windows 7 did an automatic update.  Every time there is an update, the AOL desktop does not open.  I tried to uninstall, and reinstall AOL 9.6, but I keep getting a message that my computer is running communication software that cannot be used while installing this software.  However, the communication software is not listed.  I can check my mail through AOL.com, but I like the arrangement of mail and toobar better from the desktop version.  I have Norton Antivirus 2011, but I suspect since it started off working fine, it is a problem with Windows.  How can I get AOL desktop 9.6 working on my Windows 7?

Answer
My problem has been solved.  Apparently the firewall that comes with the free trial of the Norton Internet Security program was blocking AOL desktop from opening.  Once the 60 day free trial ended and I installed Norton AntiVirus 2011 instead, I was able to install the AOL desktop and open it, even after Windows updates. Never was a problem with the icon.
