Windows 7 won't accept product key to activate

I installed Windows 7 awhile ago, and hadn't realized I didn't activate it until I got a notification that I needed to. But when I entered the product key, it won't accept it and says that my copy of Windows 7 isn't genuine. Help?

Hi KatieKat527,.

Along with Ronnie`s suggestions, check to see if the following helps.

1.      What is the error you get when trying to activate?

2.      Do you have a full version or an upgrade version of Windows 7?

Step 1: Enter the product key and activate online to know the exact error. To do so, follow these steps.

a.       Open Windows Activation by clicking the Start button, right-clicking Computer and then clicking Properties.

b.      Click Change Product Key and enter the product key. Click Next and wait for the process to complete.

Step 2: If this does not help then check to see if any of these links can help you.

Windows 7 activation error: invalid product key

Step 3: Uninstall and reinstall the product key to check for the issue.

a.       Click Start and type “cmd” (without quotes) in the start search box.

b.      From the programs list right click on cmd and select “Run as Administrator.”

c.       In the command shell type the following command and press Enter after each command.

slmgr –upk

slmgr –ipk (your product key)

d.      Activate the copy again and check if it works.

Hope this helps!
