Windows 7 "not genuine" message after 3 years without a problem

I purchased my Lenovo PC in 11/2011 and have no problems with Windows 7 until Friday when the "not genuine" message started to pop up.  I went on-line with the Microsoft technician and he said that some how a bogus copy was downloaded.  The product key in the computer does not match the product key on the sticker.  His solution was to purchase another valid copy at $107 but how do I know this same problem won't happen again?  I'm wondering why he didn't offer the solution of changing the product key back to the one on the sticker?

Anyway - here is the diagnostic results:

Neither appear on the "installed" update history.

Although they both show as "successful" and "installed" on 12/10 and 12/13 under the update history.

Couple things you can do:

Click Start
Type: CMD, from the results, right click CMD
Click 'Run as Administrator'
At the Command Prompt, type: sfc/scannow

This will check for any integrity violations

Restart your system

or if that does not resolve the issue, so a system restore before December 10th:

Using Windows 7 or Vista System Restore - How-To Geek ...

If your activation issue is resolved, try holding off on installing the updates until Microsoft officially provides guidance.
