Windows 7 hangs on log-in screen

My O/S is Windows 7 Home Premium. The system now hangs on the log-in screen so that movement of the mouse does not move the cursor on screen, hence I am unable to click on my log-in icon. The keyboard, mouse and USB wireless stick are one of the Logitech range and work OK as proved on another desktop PC. I have tried inserting the USB wireless stick into a number of other USB ports on my PC without success. I have also tried booting in Safe Mode but the same thing happens. On the basis that the system goes through the POST tests without any obvious problem does this sound like a corrupted Windows file? I do have a MS Windows 7 disk so could run this if necessary.

Thanks

Answer

If you have any non-essential devices such as a printer, external hard disk or any other device attached to the System Unit, try disconnecting them.

To access the System Recovery Environment in Windows 7, simply boot your PC, just before the system loads the Windows operating system; hit the [F8] Function 8 key on your keyboard which will launch the Advanced Boot Options menu. There you will see a new option 'Repair Your Computer', select this option and hit 'Enter' on your keyboard.

If you are able to boot to the desktop after doing this, Click Start > type in the Search box > View events log > click on the result and locate any Critical and Errors during the time you experience the crashes on your machine.

If you can post back with the events we can narrow down the cause of the problem.
