Why did Microsoft discontinue Windows 7 when Windows 8 was released?

Windows 7 was/is the best operating system Microsoft has released to date. Lets admit it, Windows 8 is built for tablets and touch screens. So why has Microsoft stopped selling Windows 7 when it is perfect for desktops? I build desktops and I refuse to install Windows 8 because it has been so poorly designed. I am thinking about 'stockpilling' Windows 7.

Thank You
