What happens if you don’t Activate Windows?
If you choose not to activate Windows, the operating system will go into what is called Reduced Functional mode. Meaning, certain functionality will be disabled.
Benefits you gain from activating:
- Access to all Windows Updates with confidence that your Windows software has the latest security and reliability enhancements from Microsoft.
- Support for your software, including downloads reserved exclusively for genuine Windows software.
A Windows 7 installation in Reduced functional mode (notice the watermark at the right hand corner).
If you don’t activate your Windows software
- You will be prompted every time you log in to Activate.
- You will receive periodic prompts to activate your software.
- Certain visual experiences will be disabled such as the Windows Aero Glass theme.
- Won't be able to update software such as Microsoft Security Essentials.

Why not activate? - that way you never need to find out.
If you're having problems activating,
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop -
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

This can result from mistakenly setting the System32 folder and its contents to 'Read Only' status.
Open Windows Explorer (Computer)
Navigate to the C:\Windows folder
Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it
select Properties
Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.
Click on Apply.
Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.
Accept the Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.
Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.
OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.
Reboot twice
Post a new MGADiag report.

The installed Key is the Default Key and can never be activated -
Assuming the COA sticker is for Windows 7 Home Premium, You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.

my computer has been doing this for about a year. i bought it from a small computer shop and i wasn't even the activation code. The problem i am having now is that, even though it turns on, it will not get to the next windows step when turning it on. I can't see anything that shows me that windows is turning on. Does this mean that windows is completely taken off on my computer and that i would need to buy a genuine windows software?

The Product Key in use is a KMS Ley which requires activation against a private KMS server at least every 180 days.
They are only useful to companies and larger organisations as they require a minimum of 25 clients for activation.
Unless you acquired this license through your College or Employer, it is almost certainly counterfeit.
From where did you purchase this license?
