Price difference for Windows 8 Pro upgrade

I upgraded my pc to Windows 8 Pro from Windows 7 Professional when it was first released to the public at the promotional price at the time.

Unfortunately the motherboard in my pc died soon after and I need to rebuild it, so I am taking the opportunity to do a major rebuild.

My question is:-

Why is the price of the Windows 8 Pro upgrade on the Microsoft Download site $399.99 and yet it is only $67.99 in the local computer store?

Is there a difference in the software?

Windows 8 Pro upgrade pricing is actually $200. I don't know how you are seeing that pricing.

Go to http://www.windows.com/buy

Did Windows XP/Vista/7 which upgraded from come preloaded with your computer? If so, changing the motherboard will invalidate the Windows XP/Vista/7 license which means your Windows 8 Pro upgrade will no longer have a qualifying license when you install the new motherboard.

This means, you would need to invest in a full version Windows 8 license

There are no full retail versions of Windows 8. If you need a full version, you will need to purchase the Windows 8 Pro OEM from New Egg. This requires a custom clean install.

Windows 8 Pro
64 Bit (OEM)

Windows 8 Pro
32 Bit (OEM)

Thank you for your reply Andre.

Firstly

Here is the path to the $399.99 page:-

1. http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/default.aspx

Click on the Products button

Click on Windows 8

2. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/meet

Scroll down to Download Windows 8

Click on Get Started

3. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/buy?ocid=GA8_O_WOL_Dis_Meet_FPP_Null_03

This is the page with the pricing

I just clicked on the http://www.windows.com/buy link you provided and it too went to the $399.99 price page

Secondly

I had built my own pc and bought the full version of Windows 7. The upgrade toy Windows 8 was done from that.

That seems to be an issue with your local exchange rate. Things seem to be a bit more expensive in Australia than they are in the US. Microsoft and number of other vendors were asked present in a hearing why their products are more expensive in AU than other countries.

But it doesn't explain my original question:-

"Why is the price of the Windows 8 Pro upgrade on the Microsoft Download site $399.99 and yet it is only $67.99 in the local computer store?

Is there a difference in the software?"

Hi J W Stuart,

Thank you for your suggestion, but that is not the problem - please refer to my original question:-

"Why is the price of the Windows 8 Pro upgrade on the Microsoft Download site $399.99 and yet it is only $67.99 in the local computer store?

So I can get the Windows 8 Pro upgrade from my local pc shop for $68, but I am concerned that it may be missing something in the programme.

The only difference is the installer (.wim vs .esd) that I'm aware of.  My preference to to purchase the Boxed version with the media.

As for the price difference I don't know, call the Microsoft Store in your location and see what they have to say about this.: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/home/ThemeID.29256200

There is no difference between the digital and physical disc copy you purchase in the store. It is the same thing. The only difference would be the physical copy includes both 32 and 64 bit DVD's in a pretty packaging with a pretty DVD discs.

You can download and create your own if you wish. If you can get it cheaper at your local store, I would go for it.
