is the product id the same as product key
Answer
Answer

No, a Product ID determines the type of support and channel the software originated from.

Microsoft licenses Windows to different product channels:

Retail, OEM, Volume License, Academic.

The Product ID helps to determine the level of support you are entitled to.

The product key consist of 25 letters and numbers (alphanumeric). The Product key pairs your license to your machine.

The product key can be found in multiple places depended on how you obtained Windows.

See below:

If you purchased a retail license, you can find the product key within the product box. The Windows 7 product key is normally found on an orange sticker attached to a pamphlet inside the box. The Windows 8/8.1 product key is found on a small business size card. See examples below. Please note, you can also use your OEM product key too if Windows came preinstalled on your computer.

Retail:

Windows 8/8.1

If your computer came preinstalled with an OEM version of Windows 7, look for the Certificate of Authenticity sticker attached to the chassis of your computer. Normally this can be at the side or top of the system unit. For laptops, look at the bottom of the chassis or inside the battery or memory compartment. It looks like the following:

No the Product ID is not the same as your Product key.  You need a 25 character "Product Key" to activate Windows. The Product ID just identifies which version of Windows you have.

Examples:

Windows Product Key: *****-*****-2VJC9-XBBR8-HVTHH

Windows Product ID: 00392-918-5000002-85601

Windows Product Key: *****-*****-WJ2H8-R6B6D-7QJB7

Windows Product ID: 00359-OEM-8992687-00006
