I got around it by running the upgrade assistant on another computer where it worked OK. After It finishes scanning it then takes you the next stage where you pay online for Windows 8.  After that, I downloaded Windows8, , created a bootable USD drive (Setup does it with a few clicks), then brought that USB drive back to the "problem" computer, and installed Windows.

It's running fine.

You don't need to know where the file is.  After the download is done, click 'next' to continue and Setup will unpack the files.  After that, on the next screen click "install later', and "create removable media".  Select USB or DVD, make sure one of them connect/in the computer and setup will format the media and create a bootable USB/DVD from the downloaded file.

I have not solved the problem.

Every time I tried to install Windows 8 using the download method, I get the error "Internal Error: Error retrieving the scan report".

I tried it on one of my other computers and it worked fine, no problem.

So this morning I bought the upgrade DVD and tried upgrading from there.  I now get the error "something happened: we can't tell if your computer is ready to upgrade to Windows 8, try restarting setup".

The computer that doesn't work is currently running Windows 7 64 bit.  It has Core i7 2700k, 16GB RAM and 2x GTX 680 SLI, an M4 SSD and a 3TB HDD.  It's not the specs that are the problem.  Something is going wrong in software.

Some people have reported that you can get around this problem by uninstalling anti-virus, updating graphics drivers or installing from safe mode.  None of these work for me.

Seems like I will have to go with a clean install.  But I'm not ready to do that yet - it will take a lot of preparation.

Installing from the bootable DVD only allows a clean install.

Looks like my upgrade is going to have to wait as it isn't working.

What I did is that I used another laptop running Windows 7 to run Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant! after it passed, I bought the key!
Then, I googled for an iso file of Windows 8! Once I had it, I made an Bootable USB then I installed Windows 8 from USB!
Now, my laptop is running Windows 8!
Hope it can be a solution!

It shouldn't be, but if by some chance the wrong version downloaded, you can do as FFFC suggests and download the x64 .iso file.  The product key will work with eiither the 32 bit or 64 bit version.
