Q: Error Code 0x800705B4 when trying to activate Windows 7

I have installed Windows 7 Enterprise Edition on several computers. Two of the computers will not activate however. When I try, I get:

"A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0x800705B4"

The description of the error is the timeout period expired. Both computers have an active and working Internet connection. I would try phone activation, but the "See other ways to activate" option on the Active Windows dialog is disabled.

Hi dhurricane,

Thanks for posting. Please try the following.

Method 1: Set up a KMS server Configure a computer on the network to host the KMS software. Then, publish the Domain Name System (DNS) settings. For information about how to set up a KMS server and for instructions about how to publish the DNS addresses, visit the following Microsoft Web site: (
Method 2: Use a Multiple Activation Key Change the product key to a Multiple Activation Key (MAK). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start click All Programs, click Accessories, and then right-click Command Prompt.
  2. Click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password. If you are prompted for confirmation, click Continue.
  3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
Note In this command, xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx represents your MAK product key.
