Upgrade from 7 Home Basic to Ultimate

I will be ordering a custom HP dv8t soon, and it will come with Windows 7 Home Premium. I can purchase 7 Ultimate for about 100 bucks after academic discount, so it would be cheaper than spending 200 bucks getting Ultimate preinstalled.

I was wondering if it comes with 7 Home Premium, can I purchase 7 Ultimate and do an in place upgrade, or is a fresh install mandatory for this?

I was thinking, maybe after I purchase 7 ultimate, go into Windows Anytime Upgrade, would I be able to enter the key off of 7 Ultimate I purchased from Academic Superstore and upgrade in place?

Windows Anytime Upgrade does not support Academic and Volume License versions of Windows 7. So you will have to do a clean install with your Windows 7 Ultimate Academic disk.
