Windows Explorer has stopped working - when clicking on Control panel icons

I discovered that when I go into control panel and try to use the Programs and Features icon as soon as I click it I get "windows Explorer has stopped working" and it will restart windows explorer.

Playing around I found if I just go into Control Panel and then close the window I get the same error!

Argh!   How do I fix this??

Answer

Hi,

please request the following hotfix:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978433 (Windows Explorer crashes and then restarts when you access a third-party Control Panel item on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 )

Click on the link View and request hotfix downloads select the platform (x86 or x64) and type in your email twice and type in the captcha ad click request hotfix.

After 1 minute you have an email with the link to download an exe. Use the password which is included inside the email to extract the update.

Install the update and reboot, now the issue should be fixed.

If the issue is not fixed, please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:
http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it.

When the explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive folder and post the link here. I take at the dump, maybe I can see the cause.
