windows 7 will not start or restore error code 0x080070017

was updating     computer locked up .          Now Will not start up or restore. Restore error code 0x080070017 .Restore could not find captlib.dll.  Im running windows 7 32bit.

tried chkdsk c:/f and r   tried regsvr captlib.dll.. also nvidia driver uninstalled but failed to install update...Whats up?

I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps.


Method 1: Test the issue in Safe mode.


Check if you can boot the computer in Safe mode. Visit the link below to know how to boot the computer in Safe mode.


Step 1: Perform Clean Boot.


If you were able to boot into Safe mode, then put the computer into clean boot state and then try to fix the issue.  


To help troubleshoot error message, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Please note:  After the troubleshooting, make sure to boot your computer to normal mode by following the step 7.



Method 2: Try the steps from the link mentioned below, which would help you to boot in “Last Known Good Configuration.”



Method 3: Try to perform start up repair and check.


If the startup repair failed, then perform system restore.

System Restore:

System restore uses "restore points" to return your system files and settings to an earlier point in time without affecting your personal files. Restore points are created automatically every week and just before significant system events, such as the installation of a program, a device, or a driver. 

Use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to run System Restore


a. Insert the Windows 7 installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.

b. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …". appears.

c. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next.

d. Click Repair your computer.

e. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your Windows installation and click Next.

f. At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box, click on System Restore.

g. Follow the System Restore Wizard instruction as usual and choose the appropriate restore point.

h. Click Finish to restore the system.
