Windows 7 error code 0x490: No OS files found on disk

I purchased the Student Copy of Windows 7 on the last day of the promotion last year. I installed it (had Vista before) and used it for a few days, but then it quit working and goes to the startup repair, claiming there is no operating system. I do not have a disc.

Have a friend with a Windows 7 DVD disk, if so boot from it and:
