It appears that you used the Open With option to associate .exe files / .lnk files with WMP. Assuming .EXE (Executable files) and .LNK (shortcuts): Get the .LNK and (if needed) .EXE file types association registry fix from here:

File Association Fixes for Windows 7:

(FYI, the REG file is a plain-text file which you can open using Notepad, in case you need to check out its contents before merging.)

Answer

Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

Change which programs Windows uses by default:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default
Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.
Associate a file type or protocol with a program / Scroll down the list until you find
your file extension (.xxx) you want to associate with your application.
