Vista based HP laptop restarting on its own - driver_power_state_failure 0x0000009f ntkrnlpa.exe

Hello,

Recently I've had a problem where my HP G70 laptop has restarted a few times on its own.  A little background first, just to put things into perspective (hopefully):

In late-May/early-June, the original AC adapter failed.  I replaced it with an Anker brand model that had the same 18.5 voltage output.

Around August, I had an virus problem of some sort where I could hear audio ads in the background.  This was corrected through the help of someone online, and he had me install (among other things) Super AntiSpyware and a firewall called Online Armor.

Now onto the current problem:

While I was away from the laptop on December 4th, someone in the other room told me the computer was restarting.  I didn't catch anything that seemed to trigger that (if anything actually was visible).  When the computer came back up after I signed on, I received the "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" notice.  Stupidly, I didn't click "Check For Solution", thinking it was just some goof.  However, this seems to have resulted in the mini dump file below, which I discovered last night:

==================================================
 • There was at least one other shutdown/restart that occurred, which did not leave a mini dump, and I mistakenly did not instruct the computer to check for a solution on.
 • Yesterday evening (December 5th), the shutdown/restart happened one more time.  Thankfully this time I selected Check for Solution, and it supposedly fixed something to do with the usbhub.sys.  That's great, though odd to me at the same time since I don't have anything connected to the USB port.
 • I did notice that these problems only occurred when I had Internet Explorer 7 open.  I'm not sure if there's any relation, but I haven't used it again.  I actually tried installing IE8, but can't seem to figure out how to get it started (and also transfer my favorites from it when I do).
 • Last night before finishing using the computer, I set the computer to NOT go into sleep mode automatically.  I believe at least one of these shutdowns/restarts occurred after the computer awoke from such a state.
 • The left side of my laptop's body feels a little warm, and I can hear the fan running.
 • A short while ago, I shut down Online Armor as when trying to research this error, I read something online about issues with firewalls can sometimes cause such a problem.

While trying to research this, I came across this from the archives:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/blue-screen-caused-by-ntkrnlpaexe/e671b55e-8cfc-41cf-a686-67524c2fe485

I did not attempt to use this Hotfix, as I wasn't 100% sure it matched up with my problem, and also since it says its for Windows 7 (I have 32 bit Vista Home).  I'm only putting this up as a reference that might possibly relate.

I've had someone on another forum suggest a complete reinstall of Windows, etc.  I really don't want to do something this drastic.  Isn't there some way of tracing the problem and correcting it vs. starting from scratch?

I'd appreciate any help.  I'm basically a novice at this stuff...

Quite often, this sort of issue (Bugcheck 0x9F with the first parameter of 3) is solvable by us looking at a couple of reports (so there's no need to reinstall Windows just yet)  As an aside, most PC techs consider reinstalling Windows as a last resort - when they aren't able to fix things any other way.

Please provide the following information/reports to help us figure out the problem:

    - Please zip up the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory

    - Upload it to the Public area of a SkyDrive account ( https://skydrive.live.com )

    - Post a link here so we can download it.

and

    - Go to Start (or press the “Win” and “R” keys at the same time), type in "msinfo32" and press Enter

    - When the utility opens, save a copy of it as an .nfo file, and another copy as a .txt file (in case the .nfo is corrupted - which happens fairly often)

    - Zip them up and upload them to the Public area of a SkyDrive account ( https://skydrive.live.com )

    - Post a link here so we can download it.

Use SkyDrive to upload the collected files:

Hello John,

Thanks for the thoughtful explanation.

Please see the link below for the files posted to SkyDrive:

Let me know if any of these are not what you're looking for, don't open, need more info, etc.

BTW - Is there something special I needed to do with these in that forums thread linked above?  I glanced through it, and not sure if I missed something besides it looking like instructions for using SkyDrive?

MSINFO32 (and the memory dump) points to Online Armor as the fault
But, as you also have Norton Internet Security installed, it could be a conflict between the 2 firewalls.

Please uninstall the Online Armor firewall
Then uninstall Norton Internet Security (as it's very old)
Then install a free antivirus for testing purposes.  There's a list here:  http://www.carrona.org/freeav.html
Then ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.

You also have numerous old drivers that may not be compatible with Win7.  Please visit the HP website and update all the drivers available there.  Here's a list of the older one's.  Please note that you won't be able to find updates for a lot of the storage controller drivers (which is a drawback of doing an upgrade install).  If we're unable to stop the BSOD's, please post back and we'll see what else we can do.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :
