sudden blue screen error on OS boot

ORIGINAL TITLE: BSO Blue Screen of Death

Hello community!

I have just launched my laptop today, and all of a sudden I got a BSD. It¨s a 6 months old laptop with Windows 7. This is what I received:

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3

Locale ID: 2070

Can I send the minidump file to anyone to help me analyse the cause of this error?

Thank you very much!

For advice on how to configure your system to create dump files please read:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/254649

The dumpfile will be created at c:\windows\minidump. You may need to change your settings in Windows to be able to see the file. To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Bug Check Code 0x9F caused by athrx.sys
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff559329(v=vs.85).aspx

athrx.sys = Atheros Extensible Wireless LAN device driver. It is either the driver or something causing the driver to fault.

What anti-virus software and what firewall are you using? Are you running two anti-virus programmes?

I am using "BullGuard" as antivirus and the regular Windows Firewall. I also checked for updates and they were two optional to install:

Intel Corporation - Display - Intel(R) HD Graphics

Update for windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2607576)

I will do some extra search about the information you have mentioned above.

Thanks Gerry, you have been very helpful.

These both feature in the dumpfile and relate to security software not mentioned by you:

afw.sys = Agnitum Firewall Driver
http://www.agnitum.com/

NSKernel.sys = NovaShield Kernel Module
http://www.novashield.com/

Thanks for the additional information. I have been searching in the web for those 2 entries but nothing conclusive on what to do next. I've never installed anything from "Agnitum" or "NovaShield Kernel" on my computer. Should I contact both security software representatives? For now, I only got one BSOD on the pc, do you think this could be a galloping issue?

I'll keep this thread updated if any other errors occur.

Thanks again!

Do they appear as a startup item?

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).
 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting, or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig.

Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information about the item selected.

Why they could be a problem is that you should not be running two anti-virus products on the same computer. There is a potential for conflict, which can lead to system failure (BSOD).

Ok Gerry, I just run "Auroruns" and searched for those 2 drivers. I unchecked both and two other entries from the same publisher:

NovaShieldTDIDriver - NovaShield Kernel Module   - NovaShield, Inc. - c:\windows\system32\drivers\nsnetmon.sys

and

afwcore - Agnitum Firewall Core Driver - Agnitum Ltd. - c:\windows\system32\drivers\afwcore.sys

Not sure if I should just delete everything, or keep them unchecked. What about "athrx.sys" that you have mentioned on your 2nd reply? Should I uncheck/delete this driver as well?

athr - Atheros Extensible Wireless LAN device driver - Atheros Communications, Inc. - c:\windows\system32\drivers\athrx.sys

Let's see if this keeps me away of getting other BSOD.

Thanks for assisting me, I really appreciate.

After the changes from yesterday, my antivirus cannot load the firewall. It gives me a Bullguard Internet Security error message: No communication with the firewall-service. (error 0x426; step 5)

According to this thread http://forum.bullguard.com/forum/15/Cant-activate-Firewall_75941.html this was a well known issue 3 years ago with previous versions of Bullguard. I will contact their technical support.

Ben

I would leave athrx.sys as it is.

You should not delete unless you are absolutely certain. I would normally only delete where they are "File not found" entries. These occur  where an uninstall has not removed everything.

By disabling you can undo what you have done. You should be able to fix your problem with Bullguard by rechecking one or more of the startup items you have disabled.
