how do i recover data from my external hd. error message-This briefcase cannot be opened because the disk is inaccessible. Verify that the disk is accessible.

I have a stand alone hd on which I have a briefcase created in windows xp pro. I am using windows 7 and when I click on open under briefcase I see this error message: This briefcase cannot be opened because the disk is inaccessible.
   Verify that the disk is accessible. 
How do I recover data?

Hi,

Try the following steps and check if it works.

a) Copy the brief case to a new location on the external HDD.

b) Right click on the brief case and change the properties to hidden and when asked apply this to 'all files and subfolders’.

c) Copy the 'hidden' brief case to the desktop on your machine.

d) Create a new folder on the desktop

e) Open the 'hidden' brief case on your desktop and copy the contents to the new folder

f) Under the properties of the contents of the new folder untick the 'hidden' box and your files should be recovered.
