Get error code 641, cannot install Windows updates and other programs

How does one repair the "Windows Installer File"? I get error code 641 on the vast majority of Win updates and some third party programs such as Adobe products.....(I run Win 7, 64 ).

I have also received code 1601.

Sorry, boys, none of the suggested worked (I had visited some before but tried again). Microsoft seems trapped in an  endless do-loop!

My system is BRAND NEW, custom build 2600k w/16 gig ram, running Win 7 Pro - 64.The techs and I chatted for 2+ hrs the other evening and could not find anything else but that there appears to be an error in the Win Installer file....

This is my workstation with 4 hard drives (8 gig total)  plus 68 installed programs, so I am very reluctant to do a reinstall of Win....

Oh, the question about other programs - those which come with an 'installation wizard' do fine. I was able to update Adobe CS4 fine but Reader and Air give problems. The only Microsoft updates which will install are for Security Essentials.....

Do I just wait for WIN 8......? (or, go back to XP)
