No sound (recording and playback) on Windows 7

I have a Dell Studio 1557 (64-bit) with Windows 7 installed when I bought it last November.  I used it without any problems until about February, when suddenly sound started not to work at all.  Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem but running even a simple program (such as sound recorder or playing a wmv file using windows player) wouldn't work.  I tried system restore as a last resort and it fixed the problem... for a while.  It reappeared again after some time, and I fixed it again that way, and again and again.  So I am wondering if this has any easy fix, and whether any programs might have compatibility issues and cause this?  Please let me know if you need any more specs.
