Audio Playback

I have a new Dell Inspiron 546 running Windows 7 - when recording onto the computer from an outside source (Album, cassette) - recording sounds fine - but the playback has a lot of static.  I've changed out plugs, made sure connections are tight, but nothing is working - what am I missing?

Hi Genniemac,

Try using the Playing Audio troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common problems with your volume settings, your sound card or driver, and your speakers or headphones.

Please follow the steps below:

Open the Play Sound troubleshooter by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio playback. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

For more information, please refer the link mentioned below: Open the Playing Audio troubleshooter:

If the issue still persists, then this might be an issue with the drivers installed for the Sound card on the computer, I suggest that you update the latest drivers for the sound card on the computer.

1. Click Start.
2. Type in Device Manager in the Start Search.
3. Expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers in the Device Manager Window.
4. Right click on the Device.
5. Click on Properties.
6. Click on Driver Tab.
7. Click on Update drivers.
8. Click OK.

Now restart the computer and install the latest drivers and check if the issue still persists.

Check if any exclamation marks are shown with the device. The exclamation mark shows an issue with the driver installed.

If the issue still persists, then I suggest that you uninstall and reinstall the latest drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check.
Refer the link: Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly:

I would also suggest that you install the latest codecs and check if the static is still present in the playback.
